down the tubes

The NYC subway system has 469 stations and 846 miles of track.

The London Underground has 270 stations, and 250 miles of track.

But it is the oldest underground railway system in the world,
opening way back in 1863.

Nicknamed the “Tube” for the circular tunnels, the platforms are so deep underground they were used as shelters during the WW2 bombing raids.

We just missed that one.

The system delivers 1.3 billion rides a year compared to NYC’s 1.7.

Okay, I'm goin'.

See ya.

Or tally-ho or whatever.

only 345 miles away

I have been trying/hoping to get to Scotland to drink at the fountains of perfection since I cancelled a motorcycle trip there in 2005.

In the meantime I visit the London Scotch rooms.

This 1926 Macallan (one of only 40 available) is a steal at L22,0000.

Brentry

Fortune smiled and I’ll be back in London soon,
and for the next eight days ahead.

But through the miracle of auto-post you can hang there with me everyday.

There’s a lot to love about London town.

Follow along. :-)

Mayfair is an exclusive area of west London holding the city’s highest concentration of 5-Star hotels.

The Queen’s grocer, Fortnum and Mason is here, and the rents are among the highest in the world.

It takes its name from the May Fair in the 1600’s,
on the site of what is now the Shepherd Market.

One of my favorite London bars, Ye Grapes has a peat fire in winter and my personal bottle of scotch under the bar since the mid 1990’s.

The Burlington Arcade features the world’s most expensive luxury brands, including the famous Manolo Blahnik shoe line.

Today Mayfair is so wealthy it needs no undergound (subway) stop, and the London buses don’t run through because no one who lives there would ever, actually ride them.

Quiet. Private. Meticulously clean.

"Yes sir, officer, I'll move along right now."

Mika is the daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor under President Jimmy Carter.

Joe Scarborough was elected three times Republican Congressman from Florida before he left for the lure of TV.

I caught up with them last year at Barnes and Noble.

Now Rumours are flying.
