nothing hippocritical

Hippo Ballerina is the inspiration of Degas’ Little Dancer Aged 14” and the dancing hippos in Walt Disney’s FANTASIA.

She stands over 15 feet tall right out in front of Lincoln Center.

She’s cast in bronze and wears a copper tutu and weighs in at over 5000, well-disciplined pounds.

She’s the work of Danish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup.
You can see something about him here:

Florence, Italy is the sculpture capital of the world and so Skaarup cast her and assembled her there.

She shipped face down and will leave the square after July 31, 2017.

Go see her! and have a great weekend.

really like terracotta

I love red clay chimney tops.

I’ve used these terracotta tops for lighting in the garden,

...and hung them on walls to fashion southwestern-style sconces.

Best of all, our 1886 ClockTower is also swaddled in cast, red clay.

And finally to the point,
so is #1 Astor Place at Broadway, from 1883.

The guy who built and owned #1 Astor liked terracotta so much he founded the New York Architectural Terra Cotta Company in 1886.

They cast details for Carnegie Hall, the Ansonia and the Plaza Hotel.

Plus about 2000 other projects.
Including this one.

Terracotta went out as Art Deco came in and the original factory closed in 1932. The building is walled-up now but still stands in the shadow of the Queenborough Bridge.

And the name of the terra cotta guy?
