le roi est mort

It’s official and it’s sad, the Bruckner Bar will not reopen after Hurricane Sandy.

Flood damaged and with landlord related issues, the venerable SoBro landmark did not recover from that devastating storm.

“The Bruckner” has served alcohol and SoBro nightlife for as long as anyone can remember. My first night there felt welcoming and real, as if I’d been coming there for years.

The food was good, rarely great, but better than it had to be for a simple neighborhood pub. And the staff were all your friends.

NY Magazine readers gave it 9 out of 10.

Now News 12 is announcing its closing.

Everyone who lives in this tight-knit artist community has Bruckner memories.

Alas, that’s all we’ve left. RIP. And sorely missed.

two miles from the UpperEastSide

With almost 1.7 million children in New York, our hometown has the most kids of any U.S. city.

dnainfo
If you are a kid, hopefully you have the good sense to live on the Upper East Side. It’s the best place in town for a child.
But if you are foolish enough to grow up in the south Bronx,
you are ranked at the very bottom.

For one thing, it’s unhealthy.

More importantly, an explosive teen Latina birth rate goes hand-in-hand with child abuse and neglect.

Incredibly, one in every ten kids we see out there is abused or neglected at home. Only one fourth can read and half are buried in poverty.

I’m sorry, but in America’s wealthiest city
that’s just fucked up.
