horrifying vegetarians since 1927

Gallagher’s steakhouse and speakeasy was founded in 1927, by Ziegfield Follies dancer Helen Gallagher.

That year Babe Ruth was the highest paid in baseball, earning an astronomical $70,000 a year.

After the cash in 1929, gamblers, sports figures and Broadway stars gathered nightly for legal alcohol and prime aged beef.

During WW2 Government mandated “meatless Tuesdays” led Gallaghers to close each Tuesday, “If we have to go meatless, we will go eatless.”

In 1964 their famous meatlocker on 52nd street opened a window to the public.

Every steak is aged to tender perfection for 21+ days in the ideal, humidity-controlled environment.

all over the map

We tend to break the contiguous 48 into regions based on geography.

But what if we assigned “Nations” based on politics and history?

Trump clinched today.

Notice he owns the Far West, part of El Norte and the Midlands, all of Greater Appalachia, the Deep South and New France.

If we elect him, this is where we’ll live.

Have a thoughtful and relaxing holiday weekend.

served with a chewing gum and cigarette reduction

Looks like an ordinary storm drain, right?

This one was cast right after Christmas, 2010.

But look closer and you can see the fish.

It reminds New York whatever we pour down there winds up with the fishes, so be careful.

But New Jersey thinks this symbol means the sewer is a good place to fish.

sich unterhalten uber design

While waiting for the train the other day I studied a Lyft ad’s graphic design.

Notice how the entire story is summed in a single image.

And how the design is “cleaned up” for the eye by
aligning the hand and the car roof.

The driver is cleverly indicated in the window.
The thumbnail does double duty as the wheel.

And all is done in Lyft’s signature pink.

Pretty good work. Train’s here.

music has finally had enough

by the time we got to woodstock

Has it really been only a couple of weeks since
Bernie Sanders could do no wrong?

With the math no longer workable but his insistence on staying in,
Bernie has trapped Hillary
and she is being ground down from either side.

To her right she has a grating asshole.

And to her left, with Republican glee, relentless sanders.

If this keeps up, she’ll emerge too abraded to be elected.

wooden you?

Four years older than our own 1886 ClockTower, Sylvan Terrace looks very much as it did when built in 1882.

Constructed in the heart of Harlem, it was the carriage house path to the Morris Jumel mansion, built in 1765.

wiki

This stand of 20 near perfect wooden houses is complete with the original Belgian cobblestones paving the street.

Landmarks Commission

Sylvan Terrace survived well through the turn of the century, but by the 1960’s it was almost lost to the elements under garish aluminum siding and bad paint.

But in 1970 an historic district was created and the lucky homeowners accepted significant funding to restore the lost woodwork, waterproofing and other details.

And in 1981 they accepted yet another $400,000 in Federal Community Development Funds to return the landmark block to its orginal color scheme of yellow, green and brown.

I’d take the money, but these would not have been my choices.
