the uncouch potato

Back in 2012 we posted about a healthy eating initiative I imagined for our neighborhood in the Bronx.

Now filmmaker and ClockTowerTenant Zef Cota...

...writes to announce a KickStarter to help Laura, his "MarketingHead" sister for author Alessandra Calamai, pictured below:

Calamai has written and illustrated seven (!) books about healthier eating and hopes to raise the printing costs for two of them.

If you help her out she'll give you books and other cool stuff.

So put the chips down!

And pledge to fund CeleryCharles!

I suppose it was inevitable

With all the development being reported in the neighborhood, it was probably just a matter of time.

Today the New York Times, Daily News and LoopNet are all reporting our beloved ClockTower has been sold for $98 million dollars.

That’s about $1 million per loft, or as little as $50,000+/- per loft if Charlies has a market cap valuation of $93 million dollars.

Either way, this is the end of an era.

Stand by for exploding rents, management harassment and eventually, Marshal dispossess evictions.

Good times. :-)

what’s in YOUR wallet?

Can you recall what you were doing at 19?

Elizabeth Holmes, can.
She was applying for her first patent.

FORBES released their “Richest” list for 2014 and there are no surprises at the top.

Gates leads as he has for the past 21 years, with Buffett right behind him and Ellison after that.

The Koch brothers combined business actually tops Gates, but their fortune split between them places at #4.

Our ex mayor is not too shabby, either, rounding out the top ten.

But Holmes is the youngest woman billionaire in the country,
and she’s a college drop-out.

Born to a medical family but with a personal fear of needles, as an undergrad she used a Stanford lab to experiment and wound up patenting a new way to take a blood sample.

Her company, founded while she was still a teenager is called Theranos, an amalgam of "therapy" and "diagnosis."

Using her method, a cholesterol count costs just $2.99.

Walgreens is rolling out Theranos Wellness Centers in their 8,100 stores, a major coup.

fortune

She still owns half after several rounds of venture capital, so a 2014 Theranos valuation of $9 billion puts her at $4.5b in personal holdings.

She just turned 30.

And the rest of the 400 wealthiest?
Together they are worth $2.29 trillion, about the same Gross Domestic Product as Brazil, a country of 200 million people.

or take a wait and see approach

The Summer Tomato Market-Bottom appears to have passed.
Supply finally overcame demand and drove the price down to $2.50 per pound in early August.

But this past Saturday the price rebounded from $2.50 back up to $3.00.

So tomatoes are up on bargain hunting and there’s still a lot of cash on the sidelines.

I’m cautiously optimistic.

Recommendation:

Then chop them with fresh basil leaves and put them into your freezer for December and January snowstorms.
