sole food
The Spanish island of Minorca, deep in the Mediterranean, is not nearly as famous as its celebrated cousins, Majorca and Ibiza.
But way back in 1918 the Mascaró family began to make shoes there, and today their factory is the hub of a robust shoemaking dynasty.
At first the Mascaró’s made fine, handcrafted ballet slippers but during the 1950’s their son Jaime brought the family firm to an entirely new level.
He began making high quality (and yes, expensive) hand made woman’s shoes that gathered demand from all over the world.
By 2005 the third generation of Mascaró’s had yet another inspiration; high end street shoes designed as an extension of their grandfather’s original dance line, and Pretty Ballerinas was born.
At launch PB shoes were available only online.
Despite no retail presence, they turned up on supermodels like Kate Moss, Elle MacPherson and Claudia Schiffer.
Celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Sienna Miller, Lily Allen, Katherine Heigl, Kate Middleton, Halle Berry and Kelly Osborne were all photographed also wearing these shoes.
The line exploded internationally and the first retail shop opened in Mayfair, London, in 2007.
This Lexington Avenue Shop opened in 2009.
Since then, Mascaró has opened 47 stores across the world on 5 continents, offering the same detail in craftsmanship, quality and design begun by their grandfather almost 100 years ago.
And as yet not made in China.

urine trouble now
Back in 2010 a Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania Roman Catholic college student was prosecuted under a rarely used 1972 law that makes it “a crime to desecrate a venerated object.”
While being charged with indecent exposure and open lewdness he told police it was actually Santa who had given him the idea.

Police said he may have also been drinking that night.
Now we have another Pennsylvanian, this time a 14 year old kid caught up under the same legal statute.
Except this time the boy stood in front of a kneeling statue of Jesus and pretended to receive an unusual kind of blessing.

Uh-huh. And then posted pictures on FaceBook to brag about it.
BECAUSE OF COURSE HE DID.
The statue in question is on the grounds of
“Love in the Name of Christ of Bedford County”.
But they are not feeling particularly benevolent.
They are pissed and pressing charges explaining it is up to God to forgive, not them.

There must be something in the Pennsylvania water.

burgher royale
Sirloin sliders with caramelized onions, melted morbier, Farmer’s Market tomatoes and basil leaf on Eli’s brioche, with homemade kirby-dill pickles.
not Burger King.
easy as pie
End-of-season fruit is plentiful and inexpensive, but a pie takes so much time!
Instead, let’s make a galette; a rustic, free-form tart for busy people.
The beauty of a galette is in not being fussy, but it’s just as rewarding as a pie.
Start a piecrust.
Put your rolling pin into the refrigerator and measure 20 tablespoons of flour.
Add four tablespoons of cornstarch, four tablespoons of vegetable shortening, and four more tablespoons of cold butter.
Salt it well and add a heavy pinch of baking soda.
Now add four tablespoons of icy water from the fridge and cream the fat and water into the flour with a large fork.
Work quickly so the fats don’t warm and you can mold it into a ball.
Flour your surface and grab that chilly rolling pin.
If everything is cold enough the butter won’t melt and diminish the texture of the finished pastry.
Roll it out but don’t worry too much about the shape.
“Roughly round” is good enough and moving quickly is the point.
Fold it over twice to lift it into your baking dish,
...then unfold and paint the bottom with melted butter.
Butter will help the dough resist getting soggy in hot fruit juice.
I found gorgeous plums and handpicked raspberries at the Farmers Market, but you can use almost anything you like. Peaches!
After pitting I quartered the plums to what would become soft, bite-sized pieces.
And that’s it, just dump your fruit in.
You can toss the fruit first with a bit of cornstarch if you think it’s going to be too juicy.
Fold the pastry edges up and over, brush the top with milk, 60 minutes at 350〫on a cookie sheet just in case it bubbles over.
Piece of cake, in a manner of speaking.
Don’t burn your mouth.
