I can’t feel my legs
What do you get when you take a sunny Sunday close to Halloween and add over six thousand bicycles at the Courthouse?
The fantastic Tour de Bronx!
This is the largest free cycling event in New York State, now in its 20th year.
The early morning began here at the ClockTower with protein and carbohydrate loading.

And then we were off to 161st street for the start!
There were occasional rest stops.

Bottlenecks.
Gorgeous scenery.
The idea was to follow the little yellow indicators, but hundreds of us got very turned around at the St. Raymond's Cemetery out in Throgs Neck.
Eventually a marshall came to find us and help get us back on course.
The 25 mile version we did covers a great deal of the Bronx, with a nice tendency to ride along the water.
The finish line is a walk-in to The Bronx Botanical Garden.
Yes. Folks were tired.
Organizers intended pizza for all registered finishers but ran out early.
No matter.
We were happy just with t-shirts to evidence we finished!
Today I’m working from home.

just remembering
Four years ago tonight we were all at the old Bruckner, celebrating Heather McTiernan’s birthday.
I posted pics the next day:
“Anytime you’ve got drinks and presents, music and strippers and twirling fire, you can be pretty sure it’s gonna be a good party.”
It was!
I shot this photo of Heather that night.
Who could have guessed three years and two months later
and she’d be gone?
I miss seeing her around. Happy Birthday, Heather.

and now a few words from our sponsor
Indiana motorist Ellen Bogan raised some constitutional questions when she was stopped for a traffic violation.
It seems Indiana State Trooper Brian Hamilton tried to save her sinning soul after pulling her car over, and she was having none of that.
“It was just weird.” she told investigators.
Trooper Hamilton issued her a warning ticket and then proceeded to ask her questions about her religious faith, of which she has none.
“Do you have a home church?” the trooper was said to have asked.
“Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior?” was something else the State Trooper wanted to know.
Officer Hamilton even produced a flyer and gave it to Bogan, insisting she tune to a WJCF-88.1 radio broadcast from "Trooper Dan Jones" called "Policing for Jesus Ministries."
Instead she called the ACLU and her lawyer.
They’ve launched a civil rights suit.
The ACLU contends that because the Trooper was on duty, his actions represent the state trying to establish one religion over all.

But the executive director of the American Family Association of Indiana sides with the Police, insisting that just because Officer Hamilton was on duty at the time doesn’t mean he should lose his right to free speech.
Stay tuned!
