The Vault is a midwest coffee shop, but it is also an experiment in human nature.
It offers fresh baked goods and espresso shots, coffee and also tea from a renovated bank vault, with a long history in Valley City, North Dakota.
But it has no employees.
It runs on the honor system.
The people help themselves.
It has a credit card reader and a money slot for checks and cash.
Receipts are running about 15% over the actual goods that are taken, indicating the locals are even leaving tips for the service they did not receive.
Why does this work? Here’s what the owner thinks.
“Would this work in your town?” owner David Brekke asks?
