Years ago, I saw the Dalai Lama speak at the Beacon Theatre.
He was wonderful. It was quite a presentation.

Full of charm and a childlike, giddy happiness, he spent several hours giggling to us that the path to true happiness came in three stages.

  • 1. He explained we must learn to separate ourselves from our worldly goods.

  • 2. He encouraged us to accept that relinquishing these material possessions is a freeing and joyful experience.

  • 3. He then suggested we rid ourselves of our material possessions, because this would make us happier.

And then, on the way out, he tried to sell us $35.00 sweatshirts in the lobby.

I kid you not. :-)
