The St. George Theatre on Staten Island is a vestigial hold-out from another era.
Built in 1929 to accommodate almost 3000 people, Radio City can hold twice as many but the St. George is no less enthralling inside.
They both reach back to a time when theatres came dressed in Moorish-Deco-Rococo Hollywood glamour and everyone went out to the moving pictures.
In those days the theatre decor was part of
the shared experience.
Since 2004, over half a million people have attended 400 concerts here featuring acts like Tony Bennett, k.d. lang, The B-52’s, Don McLean, Art Garfunkel...
...Wayne Newton, Chris Botti, Galt McDermott, Tony Orlando, Marc Cohn, Prairie Home Companion...
...Neil Sedaka, Lee Ann Womack, Taylor Hicks, Air Supply, New York City Opera, Cyndi Lauper, Rosie O’Donnell...
...John Edwards, Howie Mandel, Brad Garrett, Jackie Mason and the Jonas Brothers.
It’s hard to imagine building Hollywood glamour like this to an age of internet streaming, Netflix and catching a movie on your phone.
Step back in movie history.
Worth a scenic boatride from anywhere.
