it's not the heat it's the humidity

The “Fortress Housing” post last week prompted a fair amount of email, much of it interested in SoBro crime statistics. How safe is it here?
Lucky for us, the statistics are all online. And the results are not quite what you’d expect.

Here’s a comparison of Manhattan’s UpperEastSide-19th precinct about nine minutes away, with our 40th near the ClockTower.

No murders on the UpperEastSide so far this year, in fact the 19th averages only about one murder a year.

We’ve had 11 murders here in SoBro so far this year, well up from 14 in all of 2010. The locals are, um, restless.

7 people have been raped on the UES so far in 2011.

We’ve had 17 rapes here in the same time period.

63 robberies so far on the UES compare with 170 here.

53 Felony Assaults on the UES compare with a 219 here.

And 137 misdemeanor assaults in the 19th precinct look pretty safe compared with our 550 in just the first 6 months.

So is the UES safer?

Depends on what you look for.
There have been 119 burglaries so far on the UES and we’ve had only 108 here. Makes sense, I guess. There’s more to steal in a wealthy neighborhood.

And get this: 519 grand larceny crimes were reported on the UES so far this year, compared to only 161 here.

35 misdemeanor sex crimes on the UES look bad compared to our 16, less than half in SoBro in the same amount of time.

But the really interesting statistic? Total crime.
Overall reported crime on the UES in 2011 so far? 790 crimes. And here? 747, 42 fewer. Fewer overall reported crimes in the South Bronx.

“Reported” is probably key. If robbery is your thing, you’re gonna love the UES.

But in SoBro?
That heat wave, among other things, was really murder.
