When I was a car-loving kid in the 1950’s,
the name George Barris was synonymous with cool.
Son of a Greek immigrant, he began “kustomising” kars in Kalifornia very early, and soon Hollywood kame kalling.
The “K” in “Barris Kustom” became a signature.
Too young to drive, I hand-built his kustom models instead.
He was soon to be very famous.
With just three weeks notice, he turned a Lincoln Futura into the first Batmobile for ABC TV.
The Barris-built Batmobile sold at auction on January 19, 2013 for $4,620,000, and George Barris lived to see it.
My childhood hero of kustom kars passed away November 5, 2015
at the kool old age of 89.
He was killer with a k.
RIP.
