the way we were

Way back in 1886 while our ClockTower was being built, a man named Grover Cleveland was President.

He won the popular vote in 1884 and took up residence in the WhiteHouse as a single man.

By all accounts Grover was an honest guy, praised for his integrity and his tireless battle with political corruption. He was known for his good common sense.

But he had a flair for the dramatic too. As our 49 year old President he married Francis Folsom, a 21 year old woman to whom he was legal guardian, the daughter of a female friend.

Their marriage is still the only Presidential wedding to take place in the WhiteHouse.

Although she was our youngest First lady ever, the American people loved her despite being his ward with a 28 year age difference.

Sound familiar?
The more things change, the more they stay the same,
just as we were... way back in 1886.
