Our Lincoln Avenue subway entry to the 138th Street 6 stop offers a side by side comparison of MTA turnstile history. One is very new and one is ancient, the old one rusting away.
The new turnstile is made by the Tomsed Corporation, the largest turnstile manufacturer in the United States. They use a discreet paper label.
Perey, the manufacturer of the older one, has been selling their RotoGate to the New York City Transit Authority since 1913. They cast their name in bold relief, right into the iron.
The new one is “IN”, the old one is “OUT”,
but when was that not ever so?
:-D
Both companies are proud of their vendor status to the MTA, and both show their products online:
Side by side, these turnstiles are totally different and yet remarkably the same. Clearly they are designed to thwart jumping.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right?
Just make it rust and paint-free in stainless steel.
And impossible to jump.
