so very en-lightning

Church vaults were often used to store large quantities of gunpowder, a questionable place to hoard explosives as lightning frequently strikes high buildings.
In 1769 lightning struck The Church of San Nazaro in Italy and blew up an amazing 100 tons (200,000 pounds!) of gunpowder stored there.

The explosion leveled one sixth of the city and killed about 3,000 people, probably the world’s worst recorded lightning disaster.

An investigation revealed that church authorities had rejected lightning rods on the belief that it was heretical to interfere with divine will.

This lapse in judgment prompted the Roman Catholic Church to abandon their religious objection to using lightning rods to protect church property.
